Grant Description

Grants of $6,000 to USA teachers, scholars, and researchers for scholarly research projects in the humanities disciplines. Applicants are advised that required registrations may take several weeks to complete. Applications are welcome from scholars in all humanities and related social sciences disciplines, and from independent scholars and junior scholars.

The National Endowment for the Humanities’ Summer Stipends program aims to stimulate new research in the humanities and its publication. The program works to accomplish this goal by:

Providing small awards to individuals pursuing advanced research that is of value to humanities scholars, general audiences, or both
Supporting projects at any stage of development, but especially early-stage research and late-stage writing in which small awards are most effective
Funding a wide range of individuals, including independent scholars, community college faculty, and non-teaching staff at universities

Summer Stipends support continuous full-time work on a humanities project for a period of two consecutive months. NEH funds may support recipients’ compensation, travel, and other costs related to the proposed scholarly research.

Expected output: Archaeological Report; Article; Book; Digital Resource or Publication; Edition; Other Scholarly Resource; Translation

NEH invites applications from faculty and staff at all designated categories of minority serving institutions. The Summer Stipends program offers exemption from nomination for faculty at Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institutions (AANAPISIs), Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian Serving Institutions (ANNHIs), Native American-Serving Non-Tribal Institutions (NASNTIs), and Predominantly Black Institutions (PBIs). Additional Eligibility Criteria

NEH awards Summer Stipends to individuals. Organizations are not eligible to apply, although scholars who are tenured or on a tenure track who teach full-time must be nominated by their institution of higher education unless otherwise exempt.

Within the parameters listed in the RFP, individual researchers, teachers, and scholars are eligible whether they have an institutional affiliation or not. Applicants holding tenured or tenure-track positions at institutions of higher education must be nominated by their institutions unless they are exempt from this requirement.

Citizenship: U.S. citizens, whether they reside inside or outside the United States, are eligible. Foreign nationals who have lived in the United States or its jurisdictions for at least three years prior to the application deadline are also eligible.

Ineligible

Organizations are not eligible to apply on behalf of scholars and NEH will not transfer awards to the applicant’s institution.

- Expected notification date: April 15, 2024
- Project start date: May 1, 2024 - September 1, 2025

Letters of reference should be submitted online no later than October 14, 2022 (for applications submitted for the 2022 deadline), and October 13, 2023 (for applications submitted for the 2023 deadline).

NEH strongly recommends that you complete your registration at least two weeks before the application deadline. If you fail to allow sufficient time to complete registration with Grants.gov, you will not be eligible for a deadline extension or waiver of the online submission requirement.
