Foundation / Corporation
Keep America Beautiful (KAB)
Grants of up to $10,000 and in-kind donations to USA local governments, downtown associations, parks and recreation areas, business improvement districts, and other organizations to reduce cigarette litter. Additional funding for 2019 is intended to provide both portable and permanent ash receptacles in communities with rivers, beaches, lakes, or other waterways.
By providing people with easily accessible information and educational tools, as well as funding for ash receptacles and the distribution of pocket or portable ashtrays, Keep America Beautiful is making strides in educating the public and ensuring a cleaner tomorrow.
An effective local Cigarette Litter Prevention Program includes four proven, field-tested solutions or strategies for reducing cigarette butt litter:
- Encourage litter law review and enforcement of litter laws, including cigarette litter;
- Raise awareness about the issue using public service messages;
- Place ash receptacles at transition points such as entrances to public buildings; and
- Distribute pocket or portable ashtrays to adult smokers.
The program is implemented by a local “Task Force” organized for that purpose. A task force is comprised of community leaders, businesses, elected officials, parks and recreation personnel, public works, department of transportation, residents, and others who have a stake in the areas where a Cigarette Litter Prevention Program can have an impact.
