Searle Freedom Trust
Grants to USA nonprofits, scholars, and IHEs for scholarly research on public policy issues that impact on the personal and economic liberties of the nation and its citizens. Funding is primarily intended to support scholarship that results in the publication of books, journal articles, and policy papers. The Foundation will also fund public outreach initiatives, including seminars, conferences, film and journalism projects, and new media projects. Funding is typically provided in the form of research grants, fellowships, and other types of targeted project support.
With the foundation’s assistance, university and think tank scholars investigate a wide range of issues, including:
- Tax and budget policy
- Cost-benefit analysis of regulatory practices and proposals
- The workings of the legal system
- Environmental policy
- Social welfare reform
- K-12 and higher education policy.

The Searle Freedom Trust will not typically support the following:
- Building projects
- Organizations that are not non-profit, charitable organizations
- Organizations that are primarily dependent upon government funds
- Capital campaigns
It is the Foundation’s policy not to support unspecified overhead costs associated with university research projects.

The board of the Searle Freedom Trust meets three times per year. Proposals are accepted on a rolling basis, with deadlines of December 15 for the Spring meeting; April 16 for the Summer meeting; and August 22 for the Winter meeting.
