Request a Grant Writer

Grants of up to $5,000 to Arizona, Louisiana, Connecticut, Colorado, Texas, New Jersey, Iowa, and New Mexico public and private K-12 schools for STEM learning opportunities. Funding will be provided to schools located in communities where the funding source has an operational presence.

Eligible Communities:

  • Arizona: Ajo, Bagdad, Bisbee, Globe/Miami, Graham County, Green Valley/Sahuarita, Greenlee County, Jerome/Clarkdale, Maricopa County, Native American Communities (Hualapai, San Carlos Apache, Tohono O'odham and White Mountain Apache Tribes), and Tucson
  • Colorado: Clear Creek and Grand Counties; Lake, Summit, Chaffee, and Eagle Counties 
  • Connecticut: Norwich
  • Iowa: Ft. Madison
  • Louisiana: Greater New Orleans (parishes of: Jefferson, Orleans, Plaquemines, St. Bernard, St. Tammany, St. Charles, St. John the Baptist, Tangipahoa)
  • New Jersey: Elizabeth
  • New Mexico: Grant County
  • Texas: El Paso

Eligible projects must be delivering on one of the outcomes below.

  • Provide students developmentally appropriate opportunities to grow an innate interest in STEM.
  • Provide professional development opportunities that improve and develop the content knowledge skills of the K-12 STEM teacher workforce and teacher instruction.
  • Develop, improve or expand resources and/or curriculum available in STEM classrooms and other learning environments (for example, the adoption of a national STEM program or curriculum, or the purchase of quality instructional materials that enhance student learning of STEM concepts.)
  • Ensure students have the core competencies needed to pursue a career or degree in STEM fields.
  • Strengthen and expand opportunities for students to do and learn science in after-school settings (for example, a summer school program or after-school engineering club).
  • Provide activities that support student application of classroom STEM knowledge to real-life applications (for example, a science fair or robotics competition).
  • Increase the number of/types of opportunities for teachers and students to get to know positive, real-life individuals in STEM careers (for example, a mentor program or student internship program).
  • Link secondary education with post-secondary career and technical education programs.

Estimated Size of Grant:

Grants up to $5,000 are awarded to support projects in the eligible project categories.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Applicants may be teachers, school administrators or parent volunteers/PTA officials at public and private schools located in or near communities where Freeport-McMoRan has a presence. Applications must be submitted through the K-12 school.

A school is eligible to receive up to two (2) STEM Innovation grants during each application period. Each applicant/teacher/classroom may receive one grant award per school year.
